The Perfect Accent -- Miniature Roses
Indoors or out, youll find miniature roses very easy to grow. These little guys sometimes get overlooked because they give off little fragrance, yet they can be the perfect visual accent to any home or garden.
Compared to their full-sized cousins, miniature roses are practically maintenance-free. Just give them a "bath" once a week, and they'll last forever.
Small is Comparative
A common misconception about miniature roses is they will make ideal houseplants. Before moving them indoors, realize that miniature roses can grow up to 4 feet in height. This large houseplant will need a very generous source of light. The micro-mini roses, however, only grow to about 5 inches tall and are just as easy to maintain.
If you're determined to have miniature roses indoors, there are several tips that will make caring for them easier.
Planting Indoors
Place your plant in direct sunlight. They flourish in the sunniest windows of your home. If the stems appear to stretch out, leaving wide gaps between the leaves, your rose is not getting enough light. Either move the plant to a new location or provide supplemental light.
Make sure to bathe your plant weekly. Spraying will reduce the risk of a spider-mite attack. Gently mist the tops and undersides of the leaves. The spray also removes dust.
Make sure that your plant looks comfortable in its pot. If the pot is too small, the plant will be cramped. If too large, your roses will be reluctant to grow.
Planting Outdoors
Outdoors, most miniature roses bloom from spring until the winter. If covered with mulch, it will have a good chance of surviving frost and cold winters. You can plant your roses directly into the ground, a hanging basket, or in an 8 to 10 inch pot. Make sure your plant isn't shaded by large trees or anything that will cast a shadow. These little plants love direct sunlight.
If you choose to plant your roses directly into the ground, dig a hole about 1 foot in depth and diameter. Take your rose out of its pot and gently untangle any loose roots. Place the roots down into the hole. Refill the hole with loose soil, so that your miniature roses are level with the top of the ground. Water your plant thoroughly. These same rules apply to potting your plant.
Water Faithfully
Don't let the soil dry out. The first 3 weeks are crucial to any plant's health. Water every day for those 3 weeks. These roses do enjoy their water! After the 3-week period is over, your goal is to just keep their soil moist. Check the soil daily -- If it feels dry, give it a little water.
Miniature roses will look great in your living room, along the edges of your flower beds, or anywhere your home or garden needs a little burst of color.

Then gypsum may be the answer to help loosen the soil structure. It is not considered a miracle substance and you will find that it doesn't work right away, but a 3 year program of applications should help improve the poor soil conditions. It is not expensive and is easy to spread where needed.
Gypsum also has a job of repairing the soil that has been damaged through compaction from heavy stock, machinery, in the recovery of sub-soils exposed by earth movement and in soils affected by salinity.
A gardener faces one of the biggest problems in a new or established garden if they have a clay or layer of hard subsoil type of soil. This type of soil creates poor drainage, soggy soil and soil compaction.
When you have a new garden you can work organic humus, which should be done anyway, to loosen the poor soil. Manure, compost, peat moss and soil mulches and conditioners are normally used for this purpose.
You might ask, what do you do in an established garden?
A lot of work and time to recondition soil would be required. Gypsum may be just the answer for reconditioning the soil, because it can be spread on the surface of the soil like in the vegetable garden, flowerbeds or on the lawn. What this means is it does not have to be worked into the soil, it can just simply be spread on the surface.
What does Gypsum do?
It's main purpose is to penetrate the many clay particles in heavy or the layer of hard subsoil type soils and loosen the soil structure. Then this creates air and moisture slots that will loosen and break-up the soil structure.
Be aware that gypsum does not contain any major plant nutrients, so continue a regular fertilizing program even though it contains calcium and sulfur which is needed for plant growth. In addition, continue to put out organic humus as you plant.
Gypsum is easy to apply!
Just spread it on the lawn, using the granular type, with a lawn spreader at the rate of 40 pounds per thousand square feet. Gypsum fertilizer can be spread any time of the year and only one application per year is needed. To get it started working, water immediately after applying. If applied properly it does not affect the pH of the soil, not harmful to humans and your animals and will not burn. And because Gypsum is neutral and will not change the soil pH, you can use it in places where plants like Azaleas, Camellias, Rhododendrons and other acid loving plants grow, they need a little calcium too. Of course, gypsum should be applied per directions.

There are some safety measures that you should take when doing this. First you should always have your wires in conduit, which encases them so that animals and the like will not be able to chew through them. Leave a little bit of wire around the fixtures so that in the event that you want to adjust them, you will be able to move them around freely.
Outdoor lights can be a wonderful thing to invest in. They will add so much more character to your home, and provide a whole new area for you to enjoy after the sun has gone down.

Why Is There So Much Antique Tin?
Walk into any antique store, browse a couple of antique catalogs, tune in to the TV and catch an antique appreciation show and you will see antique tins everywhere. You would probably wonder what it is about tin that makes it so popular with antique collectors. There is probably a good explanation to it.
To begin with, tin resists the elements very well. Water and oxygen, the combination that will easily rust the strongest of steel, will do nothing to tin. If the mob were to sink a guy they didn?t like into the East River, you could pull him out 50 years later and the only thing intact would be his tin cigarette box (if he smoked that is). So now you can see why there are so many antique tin collectibles. Tin items last a long time and when something lasts as long, they become antiques. They become rare collectibles when they have been out of production for about 50 years or so.
So what? If tin lasts a long time and tin items of the last few decades are still available today, why would people fork out big dollars for these antiques? For one thing, tin is easy to shape so craftsmen of long ago loved to shape them into some interesting pieces. Anything antique that was handmade would fetch a good price no matter what it was made of. Since tin is easy to work with, replacement pieces can be easily made today. If a collector paid for a three-wheeled tin racing car, he could easily send it to an expert to restore the missing wheel. These are just some of the reasons why tin antiques are so collectible.
Tin items are also rarely produced today. Big corporations still make tin cans but rely more on aluminum than tin. Containers and toys are being made with plastic more and more since plastics use standardized moldings that make mass production a breeze. With the combination of limited production, handmade quality and a long lifespan, it is no surprise that tin items are one of the most collectible items today.

Home Security: Security Lighting Considerations
An important element of your home security ?system? is proper security lighting. Criminals wish to remain unobserved and good outdoor lighting can discourage many of them from considering your home as a target. Of the many security lighting options that are available, which one is the ?best??
The first thing to look at is efficiency. Efficiency is a measure of the amount of light emitted (lumens) for a given amount of energy consumed (watts). The light source that produces the most lumens per watt is the most efficient. Another consideration is lamp life. Cheap bulbs that need frequent replacement may actually be more expensive than costlier bulbs that lasts much longer. The third characteristic is color rendition. This tells you how natural an illuminated person or object will look. A fourth thing to consider is how fast it reaches full intensity. Some types of lighting have a delay when they start up.
There are basically three types of lighting that can be used for home security: 1) incandescent lighting; 2) fluorescent lighting; and 3) high intensity discharge lighting. Each one has advantages and disadvantages. Let?s take a look at each type and compare them.
Incandescent Lighting
This is the ubiquitous light bulb that is found in nearly every room of your house. Most people use this to light their front and rear doors. Incandescent lighting is the most inefficient of all three types. It emits light by heating a small filament to a white hot glow. About 90% of the energy it consumes is used to create the heat, while only 10% is actually converted to light. Illuminated objects have a natural appearance under incandescent lighting. The bulbs are inexpensive, but they also have the shortest life. They are best suited as security lighting in applications where they will be turned on only briefly or full illumination is required immediately, even in very cold weather.
Lumens per Watt = 15 to 25
Average Life = 750 to 2,000 hours
Fluorescent Lighting
This lighting can be in the form of tubes, or compact fluorescent lights (CFL) that have built-in ballasts and can be screwed into regular incandescent light sockets. Fluorescent lighting is about four times more efficient than incandescent lighting and lasts nearly 25 times as long. In the past, frequently turning fluorescent bulbs on and off shortened their life-span, but this is not true with modern fixtures. These lights also illuminate with a natural color. All of this would seem to make fluorescent lighting a hands-down winner over incandescent bulbs. But CFLs require a short warm-up period to reach full brightness. In cold weather, this warm-up period is considerably longer, and in very cold weather, they may not turn on at all.
Lumens per Watt = 33 to 70
Average Life = 10,000 to 20,000 hours
High Intensity Discharge Lighting
This is often called HID lighting. HID lighting is the most efficient, and has the longest bulb life of the three lighting types. But, it has a delay when first starting up before it reaches full brightness. The time it takes the light to restart after being turned off, also called ?re-strike? time, is even longer (3 to 5 minutes). This makes HID lighting unusable for security lighting applications that require an instant start. They are best suited for area lights that will be on for long periods of time (at least an hour). There are four types of HID lighting: 1) low-pressure sodium (LPS); 2) high-pressure sodium (HPS); 3) mercury-vapor (MV); and 4) metal-halide (MH).
LPS is the most efficient lighting source of all, but it is rarely used in the United States. The red-orange light does not look at all natural and the actual color of illuminated objects is severely distorted. Also, the fixtures themselves are larger than those of the other HID light sources.
Lumens per Watt = 80 to 180
Average Life = about 20,000 hours
HPS produces the orange-gold color you see in many parking lots. It is second only to LPS lighting in efficiency and has a high life expectancy similar to MV lighting.
Lumens per Watt = 45 to 110
Average Life = about 24,000
MV lighting has the longest lamp life. It also produces a more natural color than LPS or HPS. Although its efficiency is higher that incandescent lighting, it is significantly lower than the other types.
Lumens per Watt = 13 to 48
Average Life = over 24,000 hours
MH lighting produces the most natural light of all the HID lighting sources. Its efficiency and lamp life are a little lower than HPS lighting.
Lumens per Watt = 60 to 110
Average Life = about 20,000 hours
The ?best? type of lighting is the one that best fits your particular security lighting application. Only you can you can determine if energy cost (efficiency), replacement cost over time (average lamp life), the color of the light, or how fast it turns on is most important. At least now you can make those comparisons.
